Vulcan Platform Summary
As part of the value-add for Vulcan clients, we keep you updated on the latest updates to the EIA 923 and EIA 860M. Both of these tables are pulled into our Snowflake environment when updated and can be easily accessed in Tableau. This month's update shows an additional 58 plants totaling 5.7 GW were added. The good news is that no "ghost plants" (plants that appear for the first time as operational) were identified. Most of these new plants were not under construction. Additionally, three plants were categorized as canceled, postponed, or retired, totaling only 282 MW.
More than half (3.4 GW) of the new plants were additional solar facilities. We are adding over half of those plants (2.9 GW) to our coverage this week, and they will appear in Friday's release.
Regarding last week's UC update, we identified six plants starting construction, totaling 1.7 GW. None of these plants were listed as under construction in the latest EIA 860M. A unique find this week is the offshore wind facility highlighted later in this discussion.
The Vulcan Coal front is becoming increasingly interesting. In our Monday update, we observed a significant jump in individual plants at or above 90% capacity, although still below last year's levels at this time. If mild weather persists, additional bearishness on gas markets may occur if must-run coal plants appear to reduce coal inventory.
