Infrastructure Intelligence: Tracking the Resurgence of Natural Gas and US Power Capacity

Written by David Bellman & Will Benfield | Jan 2, 2026 3:53:24 PM

SynMax Research: A new month and year have begun. The latest update in 860M shows an additional 3.8 GW of new projects, with Texas leading the way at 1.4 GW. Natural gas projects are slowly making a comeback, highlighted by an additional 819 MW project listed in Louisiana.

While these additions are within the historical range, they are significantly lower than last year's figures.

Most of the added plants are already listed as "Under Construction," which we will validate next week.

Only two plants were cancelled - both in Virginia - with rankings below 2.75 indicating they were already marked as highly likely to be cancelled per Vulcan. Additionally, Intermountain Unit 2 is now listed as retired.

Ghost plant changes were minor this month with the largest being a 75 MW battery project in West TX.

The Vulcan platform is the only platform providing weekly updated insights on major infrastructure projects worldwide. We currently cover over 200 GW of power projects and over 200 GW data centers in the US, and we monitor all major liquefaction and regasification projects globally. We are also expanding our pipeline project monitoring within the US.
