EQT Buys Range Resources

EQT announced the acquisition of Range Resources. The deal is expected to close in Q1 2027 pending regulatory approval. The deal will once again make EQT the largest natural gas producer in the US, surpassing Expand Energy. EQT will encompass about 23% of all Northeast production if the deal is approved by regulators.

Synergies

EQT management targets about $325 million a year of base synergies within 2 years, with a path to more than $600 million (EQT/Range press release) after 2 years from now. That works out to a lower breakeven by $0.10/Mcfe at the base target and a $0.18/Mcfe lower breakeven at the higher target. The two companies ran about 8.9 rigs on average in 2025 but only 6.8 so far in 2026, so a combined program can likely hold volumes flat with fewer rigs. Shared lease lines in Washington County also allow longer laterals to increase production per well while keeping costs in line.

Access to the Liquids Market

Range expected their liquids to be about 30% of its total production. EQT's 3Q26 guidance implied about 5% liquids of its total production. Range's wet-gas Washington County acreage and its Mariner East NGL export capacity give EQT a solid NGL business. This diversifies revenue away from the oversupplied dry natural gas market, giving EQT ethane and propane export exposure and a natural hedge against weak Appalachian gas prices.

Access to the Other Natural Gas Markets

Rover's Washington County receipt points, Harmon Creek (average 556 of 800 MMcf/d scheduled, Sep–Oct 2026) and Revolution (166 of 490 MMcf/d), have 541 and 456 Range wells within 10 miles and no EQT wells. That is about 570 MMcf/d of unused operating capacity in Range's backyard, and Rover PA receipts are up about 57% year over year (466 MMcf/d in Oct-25 to 732 MMcf/d in Oct-26). EQT's own Rover and REX access sits in WV/OH with Sherwood (832 MMcf/d), Majorsville, Clarington, and the EQT OVC/REX Isaly interconnect (838 MMcf/d). Range Resources adds more Midwest bound outlets on the Pennsylvania side, which reduces EQT's reliance on constrained eastern routes.

Conclusion

EQT’s acquisition of Range Resources provides many benefits. This includes increased synergies for EQT to continue to increase production via acquisition while further reducing rigs and frac crews and increasing lateral lines, especially in Washington County, PA. Breakevens per well will likely be reduced anywhere from $0.10/Mcfe to $.18/Mcfe. The acquisition also allows EQT to provide a natural hedge to its dry gas production from the liquids side of the business. Finally, the acquisition provides for additional midwestern natural gas markets for EQT through the Rover and REX pipelines where Range Resources has access.
